The Alegrías Boating Blog. Alegrias is a spanish saying, more than a word, used to bestow blessings of happiness. It only seemed fitting to name our boat this for all the happiness she brings to our family.

Arrived in FL, Time to Unload

The haul went well, no problems. The tender traveled very well onboard, better than I anticipated.

Time to unload

Now to splash her and have some Florida fun in the sun!!!

Loading up Tender for Haul to FL

This year we decided to add our newly acquired tender, a Boston Whaler 110 Super Sport, to our annual FL haul. Had to custom rig a cradle out of Yoga Blocks.

The tender is all secured and ready for the long haul.

Cruising Elizabeth Islands and Marthas Vineyard
We enjoyed a glorious day on the water. Bob, Jack and I took a tour. We set out from Mattapoisett, headed over to Woods Hole, then down the West coast of the Elizabeth Islands to Cuttyhunk, across to Menemsha for lunch. Then up to Oak Bluffs, back to Vineyard Haven and then returned to launch point. All told, we covered 72nm, 4h 50m moving time with 4h stopped time, and burned 52 gallons of fuel.

Here is our track...

Restoration of a 1986 Boston Whaler 11 Super Sport
Last summer my son bought his first boat, a 1986 Boston Whaler 11 Super Sport. It has a 1985 20hp Evinrude outboard with power tilt and tele-flex steering.

Our winter project, is a father / son project, to restore this classic. Spring will come soon, we have our work cut out for us.

So here is the boat, before we started.

There's evidence of prior damage and repair. We'll inspect this....
Prior damage

It cleaned up well with an acetone rub down. All stickers removed. We already have new OEM rub rails, new OEM Boston Whaler decals, and new registration numbers on hand. We'll be ordering up the gel-coat, resins and other materials.

Let the sanding and refinishing begin!!

Update: 3/12/12
So we have all the old paint that was applied to the patched area sanded off. We've exposed the patch.
Exposed Patch

Need to verify the type of material used on this patch to ensure that the gelcoat will adhere properly to it.

Ready to go for 2011
Just got the call from the Marina. The boat and trailer are ready for to go.
  1. Re-aligned the drive and engine, as one engine mount had loosened up. They noticed it upon inspection.
  2. Changed the engine oil and filters on both the engine and generator.
  3. Changed the drive lube.
  4. Replaced the connectors on the air actuated drain valves that had been broken by MM during heat exchanger replacement last season.
  5. Inspected one side's riser and manifold. Looked good.
  6. Repacked bearings on trailer and new seals, good to go.
I'll be bringing her back for prep for the season. Yippeeee!!!

The Commissioning Season is here!
Yipee....The marina is going to have her ready early April. However, with 4 seasons under her, it's time to inspect the risers and manifolds. Hoping for good news...but prepared for the dreaded repairs if needed.

Labor Day Weekend - Almost, but not quite.
We hauled out to Fredonia, NY to spend the weekend with my in-laws. Was hoping to get out on lake Erie. Not. A low pressure system crossing the Great Lakes, brought gail force winds and 10' Seas Saturday into Sunday. No boating was had.

Lake Erie

Since I couldn't splash her, I decided to clean her up a bit and attend to some small projects. Not a total loss of a weekend!

Headed back today.

Preston's Day Out with Friends
Celebrating his 14th birthday, Preston invited a couple of friends out for the day to go tubing with us. Elizabeth and Halston came along, too.

Boston Harbor
Spent the weekend at Boston's Waterboat Marina on Long Wharf. We arrived Friday night after putting in at the Charlestown Ramp. Once tied up we headed over to Fanuel Hall Marketplace for some shopping and dinner.

Saturday we had to skip out for a bit to take Halston to his football jamboree, but then back for the afternoon. We headed out to George's Island and took a tour of the fort. The kids had a blast there climbing and running through the entire place.

Sunset was coming, so we made way back to the slip. Saturday night we headed into the North End for dinner at Pagliucia's

Sunday the rains moved in...no one was up for island hopping in the gloomy weather, so we headed over to the museum of science for the afternoon. We then went on to the Union Oyster House so Preston could have some sliders to celebrate his 14th birthday. By late afternoon, the winds were up, rain was in and it was rocking and rolling in the basin. However the 9 - 125ft plus mega-yachts provided us some shelter from the winds.

Monday we arose and made the call to head back to the boat ramp in the nasty weather. All in all, the wind direction worked in our favor at the boat ramp, so no issues reloading.
